2016 Cargo Optimization Seminar

AAPA’s Cargo Optimization program features two concurrent tracks addressing both container and non-container issues pertinent to today’s ports. The Supply Chain Optimization track examines challenges relating to terminal congestion, chassis and empties management, operational practices and communication gaps along the supply chain. The Community Relations and Port Diversification track illustrates tactics to garner community support by leveraging effective public relations strategies which communicate the intrinsic value of ports to the public. Additionally, this track assesses diversification strategies that create more dependable and sustainable income streams.

IMO Container Weight Verification Webinar

The AAPA, the World Shipping Council (WSC), the National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE) and the National Industrial Transportation League (NITL) teamed together for a webinar to discuss the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) requirement that shippers verify container weights effective July 1, 2016. The webinar is intended to address member feedback concerning implementation of the policy change requiring shippers to provide a verified weight (verified gross mass or VGM) for all packed containers prior to loading aboard a ship for export and its impact on ports. All speaker presentations are posted in PDF file format.
2016 Shifting International Trade Routes

Back by popular demand, AAPA and the Transportation Research Board are co-sponsoring this special one and a half day workshop. It will be hosted by the Port Tampa Bay, and presented in cooperation with the U.S. Maritime Administration. The program will address shifting international trade routes and how the various players in the transportation industry view the progress of recovery from the recent economic recession. The program will also focus on how trade patterns and infrastructure needs will be affected by the planned expansion of the Panama Canal. Speakers will address the international economic outlook and shifts in global trade; discuss infrastructure needs from the perspective of cargo owners, ocean carriers, ports, terminal operators, warehouse and distribution centers, and rail interests, and provide an update on the project to expand the Panama Canal. 2015 AAPA Port Real Estate Seminar

In addition to handling cargo and passengers, many ports rely on income produced from leasing commercial, industrial and retail property in their portfolio of assets. This program will address the specialized concerns of port directors, port planners, property development and real estate managers, marketing managers, and business and trade development managers whose responsibilities include managing or marketing their port’s real estate portfolio. Industry experts and panel discussion topics will address port real estate, non-cargo business, commercial, retail and industrial property utilization, and financing. Special emphasis will also be placed on public-private partnerships, strategic asset utilization, use of port property to advance cargo development opportunities, effective port property lease structures and best practices in property management.
XXIV Latin American Congress of Ports

The Latin American port community met for its annual summit in Arica, Chile, organized by the AAPA and Empresa Portuaria Arica. Just as in previous years, this event was the most important business meeting in the Latin American port sector, where major port projects from our continent were presented and discussed, dialogue fostered, ideas and knowledge exchanged, and opportunities generated to strengthen trade relations among port authorities, operators, service providers and leaders of the maritime industry. The theme for this year's Congress was "Port Sustainability and Development in Latin America."

2015 Cybersecurity Seminar

Like other components of critical infrastructure, ports continue to confront the evolving and growing threat of cybersecurity. Within port staffs, this issue is cross-disciplinary, involving information technology directors and security officers, and many entities throughout the port complex. A wide array of U.S. federal agencies – Coast Guard, FBI, Secret Service, NIST and others – have a role to play in developing and implementing best practices and reporting and responding to breaches of cybersecurity. AAPA’s 2015 Cybersecurity Seminar will examine the ways in which cybersecurity impacts port operations and will inform attendees about emerging issues related to cyber threats, regulation of cybersecurity plans, the availability of federal funds to address cybersecurity at ports and the handling of cyber incidents at ports.

2014 Public/Government Relations Workshop

While most ports and related organizations have developed public and government relations programs to reach out to their key constituents, some programs are more robust and strategic than others. Communications effectiveness can be directly linked to a proactive plan that first considers how specific audiences may perceive the organization’s messages and activities, then follows through to evaluate the outcomes and adjust the plan as needed. In this workshop, participants heard from a host of public and government relations experts to get some great advice on everything from developing key messages and interviewing for television, to communicating with community activists and government leaders, then evaluating the outcomes. The workshop culminated with a half-day broadcast media interview training session, including development of key messages prior to going on camera. One or more members of the audience were invited to come on stage to give a digitally-recorded TV interview on a controversial topic at their port, then listen as the trainer and the audience reviewed the recorded interview and provided constructive feedback for the interviewee. This seminar is a PPM® Requirement.

2013 Public Relations/Government Relations Workshop

While most port communications are advocacy, news, educational or issues management in nature, when crises arise, communications may become hurried, harried and stressed. This workshop will explore the various types of crisis responses—ranging from natural and manmade disasters to ethical dilemmas and reputation management—and showcase innovative ideas and “best practices” from both within and outside the seaport industry. The second half-day of the workshop will be an interactive, facilitator-guided program in which participants will separate into seven unique crisis scenario groups to explore messaging for their particular crisis. During the second half of the morning, each group will give a 10-minute presentation in the form of a mock press conference to communicate their organization’s crisis response and to answer any questions from the audience. AAPA-USDOT MAP 21 Freight Provisions Webinar

On September 20, AAPA staff conducted a webinar with the U.S. Department of Transportation on the freight provisions contained in the latest transportation law known as “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 20th Century (MAP-21). AAPA President & CEO Kurt Nagle and Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy Polly Trottenberg introduced the topic and both stressed the importance of the inclusion of seaports when considering the national freight policy and strategic plan called for in the new law. The presentation was led by Paul Baumer from the Office of the Secretary at USDOT. The webinar was followed by a question and answer session with experts from all of the modal administrations with freight policy jurisdiction.

With a multi-year, game-changing federal surface transportation authorization on the horizon, coordination between state DOTs, regional/corridor planning organizations and port authorities is vital to maritime economic development. A port's ability to expand and enhance access to new and re-developed facilities relies heavily on mitigating existing congestion and providing new capacity for freight beyond the gate. Coordination with public transportation planning organizations has become a prerequisite for getting federal/state funding for port access projects. 2007 AAPA Quality Partnership Initiative Third Annual Project Managers Workshop

This year’s QPI Project Managers Workshop was hosted by the Port of Palm Beach with a timely agenda focused on the regulatory process. Primary topics included the permitting process (Day 1) and dealing with resuspension of sediments (Day 2). This workshop format allowed full discussion of topics with participation by all attendees. In past years these “roll up your sleeves” workshops have given Corps and port industry project managers an opportunity to meet, discuss and begin resolution of long standing issues and misunderstandings about processes and programs employed by the various offices and departments, both government and industry.

Multi-modalism in Port Activity Beyond Road Transportation: The studies of viability maintain that road transportation is most efficient for distances of less than 300 km. Meanwhile rail transportation is most efficient for distances between 300 and 500 km and water transportation is best for distances over 500 km. However, most of the cargo in Latin America is transported by road/highway, which is less advantageous means of transportation and the deterioration of roads and highways as trucks usually transport more cargo than what they can really carry (adapted from a study about agricultural indicators by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
